A Wedding Photographer’s 5 Tips for an Awesome (and Photogenic) Wedding Reception

While everyone will have an opinion about what makes a wedding reception awesome, there is someone’s opinion you really should listen to -and that’s the photographer, especially if you’re investing in professional photos.

Photographers have (almost definitely) been to more weddings than almost anyone else. And, as such, they’ve seen what works and what doesn’t - and that goes for the couple, the guests, and the way the final photos turn out.

So, while your reception should most definitely be something you love, here are five tips that can help you when planning your wedding (and all from the perspective of a photographer you can trust)…

1. Give Your Wedding Favors More Thought Than You Think You Should

Wedding favors have the opportunity to be the most personal (and fun) part of your reception. Not only do they give your guests something fun to take home (and remember your big day), but they can also be incredible photo props. Whether part of the table decor or fun gifts they can show off at the reception, the more personal and unique your wedding favors are the better.

2. Surprise Your Guests with Something Unexpected (and Pre-Planned)

Weddings can, unfortunately, become “same old, same old” if you’re not careful. And while traditions and customs can be sweet, it’s important to infuse your reception with as much personality as possible (especially if you’re wanting really memorable pictures). Think about a way you can surprise your guests, whether in the form of a rehearsed first dance, out-of-the-ordinary entertainment (like acrobats or belly dancers) or a special treat (like announcing an ice cream truck has just pulled up).

3. Don’t Underestimate the Power of Great Music

Whether you choose to have a live band at your reception or you hire a great DJ, the music will often make or break the overall vibe of the evening. The music that is played can (and will) transform the environment, so be careful and thoughtful about your selection. Do you want the music to encourage people to dance? Do you want people to sing along? Do you want music that makes everyone stop in their tracks to listen? Remember, your photographer is going to capture the emotions and feelings of your guests - and those are 100% influenced by the music that is being played.

4. Think About the Flow of Your Reception - and Guests

The layout of the room or area of your reception, as well as the flow of one event to the next, matter. Do your best to allow your guests the freedom to move around without them ever needing to guess “what’s next?” or “where do I go?”

5. Never (Ever) Let Your Guests Get Too Hungry

Want to have your reception clear out fast? Let your guests get hungry. As much as people will love celebrating with you, hunger is real - and your guests will leave if they’re not being fed. The better your food is (and the more of it you have), the happier (and more photogenic) your guests will be.

These are some of the biggest observations I’ve made at receptions, hopefully they help you plan the wedding of your dreams!
